Welcome letter from Congress Convenor

On behalf of the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS), I invite you to attend the inaugural INORMS Congress on the Internationalisation of Research: The Big Issues and Opportunities of the Decade for Research Leaders and Managers being held at the Sofitel Brisbane, Australia 22-25 August 2006.

This international event, to be hosted by the Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS), will be of interest to research administrators and managers, researchers and trainee researchers in developed and developing nations, and to policy makers involved in the conduct of research in a global context.

The program is intended to reflect the objectives of INORMS which are to internationalise the body of knowledge on research management, to exchange best practice and to develop international approaches to supporting the research enterprise. The themes will include:

  • Managing complex partnerships (e.g. risk management, IP management, technology transfer, creative commons, managing cultural difference, and interdisciplinary projects);
  • The responsible conduct of research across international boundaries (e.g. codes of conduct, ethics in research involving humans, animal welfare, gene technology, bio-safety, OH&S);
  • The evaluation process (e.g. politics of peer review, best practice, models for assessing and rewarding research quality); and
  • The professional development of R&D managers and leaders (e.g. sustainable mentoring structures, continuing education models, learning organisations and global sharing of best practice).

Participants can expect to hear the latest information from panels and individual experts who have gained their knowledge from hands on experience, learn from initiatives of others, workshop novel ideas, develop important new contacts, and leave with practical advice on how best to lead teams and manage research for maximum outcomes.

The geographic spread of INORMS now encompasses the USA, EU, Australasia, Pacific Rim, and South Africa, with founding member societies including:

I look forward to welcoming you to Brisbane and engaging in some lively discussions and debates at INORMS 2006.
